The Fundamental Dieting Advice

Wednesday, July 4, 2007

I must admit. I'm not a diet guru, but my stomach has one heck of a diet. This advice is so easy to implement because you don't need to buy and supplements or eat something special. You do not need to eat something different from your usual routine. This has been conventional wisdom that has been passed on from generation to generation that we take for granted.

"Chew your food!" is what my mom would say when I eat in a rush. We tend to ignore this principle but properly chewing food has its benefits:

  1. Your digestive system works with less effort - Just remember we are not boa constrictors that swallow food. That is why we have teeth. It's not just for smiles, but your stomach smiles when food is broken down already. In reality, digestion starts when you start chewing your food. Since the digestive organs work less, the food and the waste products stay for a shorter period in the stomach
  2. Allows more saliva to be applied on the food - The longer you chew, the more saliva will be applied to the food. Saliva breaks down the food even more so less work will be done in the intestine. Since the food is broken down, the nutrients and vitamins of the food is easily absorbed by the body
  3. Allows you to savor the food even more - The reason why I'm not picky with the taste of food is that I eat and not taste. Great experts on wine are not called wine drinkers, but they are called wine tasters. The tasters don't consume large amounts, but they sip and they play their tongue around it. If they gulp it, they get drunk
  4. Prevents from swallowing bones - The teeth serves as a strainer for objects that will tears the intestinal lining like meat and fish bones

Finally, here are some tips to make chewing easier:

  1. Consume smaller spoonfuls of food - It is difficult to chew if you've stuffed your mouth with food. I also experience times when conversations are delayed because I have my mouth full.
  2. Listen while you chew - It's a complete receiving experience when you listen to a person and at the same time your mouth is tasting the food. You also maintain eye contact at a longer period because you chew longer because you don't need to look at your plate too much.
  3. Saliva marinade - It is like you are licking your food inside your mouth. Making the tasting process even better. Let your tongue explore the tastes of the food.
  4. Avoid piping-hot food and chili food - These are major deterrents to savoring the food. It makes you swallow the food quickly. Hot food burns your mouth and tongue it affects your tastebuds, which forces people to eat even faster

That's it for my advice. With this simple tip, I get my weight loss program started. Happy tasting!
