Your Baby
What's your OS? Does the price include the OS? Why did you choose to install that OS?
My Baby's OS
Finally, I got a comment aside from my birthday greetings!
The OS included with it is Linpus, which is a Linux OS. I never had a chance to try the OS. Besides, I needed to download the OS from the Internet which was a big hassle. I would prefer a more popular distribution over that one.
I have installed Windows XP Professional and obviously the price would be higher if it was included with it. I also have Ubuntu Linux dual booted with it.
Ubuntu is becoming to be a very popular Linux distribution and I like the fact that Dell is selling computers with it pre-installed. I have not removed my Ubuntu installation since I like using Ubuntu when I surf in WiFi hotspots. I observe a faster WiFi web experience in Ubuntu than in Windows.
Re: Baby's OS
Windows XP Pro is a good choice esp. if you're doing development of some sort and it's cheaper than Vista as well. At least the latest MS Office software works with XP.
So why XP instead of Vista? What do you normally use Windows for?
What made you decide to do dual boot?
What criteria made you choose Ubuntu? Have you heard of the OpenSuse vs. Ubuntu comparison?
What do you use Ubuntu for?
XP vs. Vista / OpenSuse vs. Ubuntu
I use XP because I don't want my baby to be tortured with Vista. Even though I added 1gig of memory, I still decided to stick to XP. I don't feel there is enough improvements to use Vista right now. Since Dell is offering XP as the OS installed, it shows that XP is still a good OS.
I use Windows for web development, audio editing, photo editing and Internet surfing. I rarely play games.
I decided to dual boot so I am free to choose which OS I want to use whether it be Windows XP or Ubuntu.
I have tried a lot of Linux distributions like Fedora, Suse, Mandrake, Debian, Mepis and I chose Ubuntu because of it's regular release cycle. Before Ubuntu I chose Mepis. Ubuntu works well with my laptop. It takes advantage of its high resolution. Actually that question warrants an article.
I'll choose Ubuntu over OpenSuse because of the Novell-Microsoft deal. Since Novell owns the Suse trademark, I believe that they have compromised their open source ideology by having a partnership with Microsoft. I pretty much disregard the functional comparison due to my open source ideologies.
I use Ubuntu when I surf in a WiFi hotspot. I use Ubuntu as an emergency tool to remove viruses in my laptop, if ever my baby gets infected. Eventually I will get to run my web development applications in it.
Your favorite programs...
Now that you have revealed what you use your baby for, would you tell us what programs/packages you use for audio editing and photo editing? I'm quite sure you are using Firefox for browsing.
How do you use Ubuntu to remove viruses? This approach is quite new to me, a Windows guy.
Thanks!
Programs Used...
For audio editing I use Adobe Audition. I'm familiar with its functionalities
For photo editing, I use Adobe Photoshop. This is the best!
Yes, I do use Firefox because of the Add-ons.
When I enter a Linux OS like Ubuntu, it does know that it is a virus. Windows viruses do not affect Linux. So if there is a file that I feel is a virus, I enter Linux to erase the file. Latest versions of Linux can view Windows partitions. I can also use an anti virus program like Clam AntiVirus to scan the system if I need to.
Very good post, thanks a lot.
Very good post, thanks a lot.
Getting into it...
I'v noticed that you refer to Dell in your posts:
and
Are you connected to Dell, Inc.?
No, I am not...
If I was connected with Dell, I would've bought their laptop instead.
Dell is worth mentioning because they are the first company, that I know of, who sells consumer laptops and desktops with Linux preinstalled.
