Depth of Understanding
Table of Contents
Atomic ideas climb five depths of understanding - not three education tiers.
Key Concept
- Atomic ideas climb five depths - recognize, explain, use, connect, create - not beginner, intermediate, advanced.
- A professor learning cryptocurrency may sit at Level 1; a high school programmer shipping patches may reach Level 5 - depth is not years of school.
- Garden notes carry
level_1throughlevel_5afterkey_conceptfor this ladder on each atomic claim. - Progression: Recognize, then Explain, then Use, then Connect, then Create.
Level 1 - Recognize
Depth of understanding is how far you own one idea - from naming it to creating with it - not years of school.
Level 2 - Explain
The five rungs measure ownership of the same claim - naming it is not explaining it, using it, seeing tradeoffs, or building from it.
Level 3 - Use
Before you teach or file a note, name which rung you are on - define-at-dinner without a real use means Explanation, not Application.
Level 4 - Connect
Depth is per idea - a professor can sit at Level 1 on crypto while a teen ships at Level 5; flashcard recall can mimic depth without Application or Systems.
Level 5 - Create
Write level_1 through level_5 on each garden claim, then practice until you create or extend from the idea - The Feynman Technique only stress-tests the first two rungs.
Examples
- I could define Open Source at dinner but had never deployed it - I was at Explanation, not Application.
- Shipped a Hugo theme fork and only then saw how maintenance and security change when the repo is public - Systems clicked after Generative work.
Note Relationships
| Relationship | Wikilink | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| contradicts | Spaced Repetition | when flashcard recall mimics depth without Application or Systems |
| extends | Active Reading | Reading with a pen feeds higher levels after capture |
| extends | Atomic Notes | One claim per note - each note's five levels map depth on that single idea |
| extends | Deliberate Practice | Train the level where you stall - not the rung you already own |
| extends | Layered Reading | Each pass through the same source buys the next rung |
| extends | The Feynman Technique | Plain teach-back is the honesty check at Definition and Explanation |
