Discipleship vs Leadership
Table of Contents
Discipleship is who you follow upward; leadership is who looks to you for direction and care.
Key Concept
- Greatness is service - Son of Man came to serve; two seats, upward allegiance and outward care.
It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”Matthew 20:26-28 NASB1995
- Discipleship answers upward; Leadership answers outward - direction, pace, and care when people look your way.
- Swapping them is the failure: running a standup is not following Christ, and a promotion does not cancel private obedience.
- Servant Leadership overlaps on horizontal care - but that is still not the vertical allegiance discipleship names.
Level 1 - Recognize
Discipleship is who you follow upward; leadership is who looks to you for direction and care - two seats in one person.
Level 2 - Explain
Salute up and lead the squad below - like obeying the coach while your team watches you, upward allegiance and outward care stay separate.
Level 3 - Use
Name which seat a decision serves before you act - upward to Christ or outward to the room; the org chart does not cancel the cross.
Level 4 - Connect
Discipleship answers upward; Leadership answers outward - Servant Leadership overlaps on horizontal care but does not replace vertical allegiance.
Level 5 - Create
Create a two-seat decision check that names what obedience to Christ requires and what care the people following you need.
Examples
- I ran the youth program like a CEO and skipped morning prayer for a month - glad discipleship pulled me back to who I follow when nobody is watching.
- Promotion meant calm direction in the outage, but I still had to confess the shortcut I took on the report - leadership is who looks to me; discipleship is who I answer to.
