Forgiveness
Table of Contents
Extend the forgiveness already received, not ledger-keeping on debts Christ cleared.
Key Concept
- Forgive others or the Father will not forgive you - daily rhythm, not a one-time sermon nod.
For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.Matthew 6:14-15 NASB1995
- Forgiveness extends the forgiveness already received, not ledger-keeping on debts Christ cleared.
- The unforgiving servant - king forgave an unpayable debt; refusing a small debt exposed a heart out of step.
- Seventy times seven ends ledger-keeping - stop counting how many times you have been wronged.
- The unforgiving servant parable makes the math plain: the king forgave an unpayable debt picture of Free Grace already given.
Level 1 - Recognize
Forgiveness clears the slate with others each day - forgive as you want the Father to forgive you.
Level 2 - Explain
Like rinsing a dish before reuse - daily rhythm, not a one-time nod when the sermon felt moving.
Level 3 - Use
Forgive one person today before you ask God to forgive you tonight - stop counting how many times you were wronged.
Level 4 - Connect
Because forgiveness extends grace already received, refusing to forgive exposes a heart out of step with the gift.
Level 5 - Create
Create a daily forgiveness practice that names the debt, releases the count, and turns received grace into the next merciful move.
Examples
- My kid hurt my feelings at breakfast and I said it is fine while nursing the grudge - glad releasing the debt held even when it still mattered.
- I prayed about forgiving others on autopilot and skipped that line because I am still mad at my brother from last Sunday - you cannot ask for mercy with one breath and hold a grudge with the next.
