Free Grace
Table of Contents
Eternal life is Christ's gift received by faith alone, not wages for commandments, principles, or good works.
Key Concept
- Hear Christ's word and believe - you have crossed from death to life; judgment is not hanging over your head.
“Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life. Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. For just as the Father has life in Himself, even so He gave to the Son also to have life in Himself; and He gave Him authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of Man. Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.John 5:24-29 NASB1995
- Grace through faith - gift never earned; good works come after the gift, not to buy the ticket.
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.Ephesians 2:8-10 NASB1995
- Free means no strings on the front (wages) and no strings on the back (bribe) - faith is trust in Christ's promise, not surrender as the entry fee.
- Justification finishes at faith; Standing vs Fellowship keeps the verdict separate from daily closeness; Assurance rests on the promise - fruit may back up a claim, never grounds belonging.
- Sanctification, Discipleship, and Grateful Obedience are the thank-you life; Eternal Rewards and the Judgment Seat weigh works; Loss of Reward never undoes eternal life.
- Repent and Believe places turn-from-sin with fellowship; cheap grace is a smear - sin still brings discipline, broken fellowship, and loss of reward.
Level 1 - Recognize
Free grace means eternal life by hearing Christ's word and believing - salvation is gift, not wages for performance.
Level 2 - Explain
Like a ticket already bought - belief crosses from death to life now, with no front-end wages and no back-end bribe.
Level 3 - Use
Rest on the promise today when the week was ugly - assurance is not a scorecard; works belong to the walk after.
Level 4 - Connect
Good works answer grace - they may back up a claim, never purchase the ticket or ground assurance by performance anxiety.
Level 5 - Create
Build a plain teaching map that keeps Justification free, places Sanctification and Discipleship after the gift, grounds Assurance in Christ's promise, and keeps Eternal Rewards off the destiny ledger.
Examples
- A teammate listed every good deed this month like it was his ticket to heaven - glad I trust Christ's promise for eternal life, not my report card from the season.
- My kid thinks he has to be extra good the week before his birthday to deserve presents - grace does not work that way with God either; the gift is already decided before the behavior.
