Layered Reading
Table of Contents
One pass through a book is not absorption - return when more depth is needed.
Key Concept
- Pass through the same source at increasing depth - skim, highlight, summarize.
- Skim first pass, mark second, extract third - same book, three depths, one sitting at a time.
- I do not read a book once and pretend I absorbed it - I pass through again when I need more.
Examples
- First pass on the coaching manual marked three sections; second pass only those got sentences in my own words.
- My kid skims the chapter for gist first, then rereads only the confusing paragraph a second time so she can actually explain it back to me.
