Life Before Achievement

Created Aug 6, 2026, 6:37 AM · Updated Aug 6, 2026, 6:37 AM

Human life is non-negotiable - even when the goal is a championship or a reputation for toughness.

Key Concept

  • Those goals have value only while the methods used to reach them respect safety.
  • When an activity offers limited benefit but carries an avoidable risk of irreversible harm, leaders choose the safer course.
  • The person carrying the risk is rarely the person collecting the trophy.

Level 1 - Recognize

Life-before-achievement means a win counts only when the path to it does not break safety rules or leave permanent harm.

Level 2 - Explain

Like crossing the finish line without knocking someone down so hard they cannot get up, the method must respect safety before the trophy.

Level 3 - Use

Before you chase the metric, ask whether the route protects people - if not, change the plan before you celebrate.

Level 4 - Connect

A win that costs someone their health or trust is borrowed time until someone pays - achievement without safety is not a real win.

Level 5 - Create

Safety by Design and Duty of Care sit upstream - design the route so achievement never borrows against irreversible harm.

Examples

  • I said no to the backyard rope swing over concrete when a low tree branch and mat did the same fun with softer landings - glad life beat achievement on that call.
  • The school canceled the cliff-jump field trip when the park picnic hit the same bonding goal without a credible risk of a broken leg.

Cheer Between Points - Not on the Toss

Cheer Between Points - Not on the Toss

If you're in the stands for Alex - save the roar for between points. A shout on the toss hits her too. Clap good tennis both ways, and leave the lines to the chair.

Why My Son Loves Toca Boca World

Davis plays on a locked-down kids phone, not mine. Toca Boca World beat the apps every other kid talks about - no chat, no feed, no ranked meltdown when the timer hits.

Why I Love Modern Board Games

Why I Love Modern Board Games

Toy-store games never clicked - Monopoly unfinished, chess theory that didn't survive a real game. Modern hobby games fit my 30-minute table, home shelf and travel pouch both.

Why I Prefer the Google Ecosystem Over Apple

Why I Prefer the Google Ecosystem Over Apple

I run a MacBook Pro M4 and an 11th-gen iPad - and I still live in Google's ecosystem. One Google account glues my Mac, Android, Linux, and TV together. No compelling reason to add an iPhone or Apple Watch on top.
