Mercy
Table of Contents
God withholds the punishment I deserve and calls me to show the same compassion to others - not pretending harm didn't happen (Matthew 5:7, 18:21-35; Luke 10:37; Ephesians 2:4).
Key Concept
Grace gives good I couldn't earn; mercy spares bad I had coming.
Ephesians 2:4-5 keeps them in one breath: rich in mercy, saved by grace. Free Grace is how that pair lands on eternal life - gift through faith, wrath withheld, heaven given. Forgiveness is mercy toward a debtor: release what you're owed because the King already cleared yours. The Beatitudes promise mercy to the merciful. Judge Not starts from the same ground - I needed mercy before I play judge. Love Your Neighbor and Love Your Enemies turn mercy outward: act for the hurt person, bless the persecutor. PKM mirror: Sunk Cost Fallacy in reverse - stop treating old hurt like a debt I'm still collecting when mercy already closed the ledger.
Examples
- I prayed about forgiving others on autopilot and skipped that line because I'm still mad at my brother from last Sunday - you can't ask for mercy with one breath and hold a grudge with the next.
- A coworker apologized again for the same mistake - mercy forgives from the heart; boundaries stay where trust still rebuilds.
