Minimum Effective Dose
Table of Contents
The smallest change that still moves the needle - not the heroic overhaul.
Key Concept
- I borrowed it from medicine: enough to work, not more than needed.
- Applies to PKM habits, fitness, and side projects.
- More input past the dose is noise - not a heroic overhaul.
Level 1 - Recognize
Minimum effective dose is enough input to move the outcome, not more than needed - borrowed from medicine, applied to effort.
Level 2 - Explain
Like one bandage on a small cut, not ten, more input past the effective point wastes energy without improving results.
Level 3 - Use
Run the pilot, check the result, stop adding steps when nothing improves - doubling effort is not doubling effect.
Level 4 - Connect
The dose depends on the outcome and can change with context - too little does nothing, while more past the useful point adds cost without effect.
Level 5 - Create
Design a smallest-working trial with Minimum Viable Product, use Pareto Principle to cut excess, and extend the dose only when the result proves Low Hanging Fruit is no longer enough.
Examples
- Ten minutes of flashcards on the jeepney beat an hour of app setup I would never open twice.
- The coach added one footwork drill before buying new shoes - small dose, daily reps, feet learned faster than gear ever did.
Note Relationships
| Relationship | Wikilink | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| contradicts | Compounding | when enough-to-work beats stacking past the dose |
| extends | Accept the Starting Line | Real limits set the smallest change that still works |
| extends | Create Regular Connection | Smallest connection habit that still lands |
| extends | Develop, Don't Endanger | Smallest challenge that still develops the skill - not maximal suffering as the dose |
| extends | Free Grace | Enough gospel to believe - not endless proof before you rest |
| extends | Justification | Faith is the one sufficient act - declared righteous at faith, not after merit stacks |
| extends | Pareto Principle | Find the smallest change that still moves the needle - the slice of effort that earns most results |
| extends | Practice Small Experiments | Smallest trial that still tells you something |
