Safety Comes First
Table of Contents
Safety comes first = following someone else's lead stops when serious harm is on the table. Respect isn't letting danger or cruelty run because I don't want to be controlling. I stop the unsafe thing, then restore choice when the situation is stable.
Examples
- Sports: A teammate wanted to play through a head hit - I didn't “support his call”; I got the trainer. Following his lead would have meant ignoring the injury.
- Non-technical work: A coworker wanted to skip the lockout tag on a jammed machine - I didn't go along to keep peace. Power off, tag on, then we troubleshoot together.
- Home with children: My kid wanted to ride in the truck bed on a bumpy road - “your choice” ended at the seatbelt. We could pick music; we couldn't pick the hospital route.
- Real world: A friend was too drunk to drive and insisted he was fine - I took the keys and called a ride. Friendship isn't co-signing the crash.
