Turn the Other Cheek

Evergreen Created Jun 20, 2026 · Updated Jun 20, 2026

Turn the other cheek = when someone strikes or insults you, don't return the same - break the cycle of retaliation (Matthew 5:38-39).

Jesus rejected the limit of “eye for eye” as a personal ethic for disciples. The point isn't passivity toward all evil - it's refusing to become what hurt you. Same logic as Sunk Cost Fallacy: stop throwing more anger after sunk hurt. Goes further than The Golden Rule (proactive good) and pairs with Love Your Enemies (heart posture). Free Grace frees me to absorb cost without keeping score for heaven.

Extends Love Your Enemies. Contradicts The Golden Rule when I wait to hit back before acting well.
